The Morning Report

In daily operation · private beta

A daily macro and markets brief in newspaper form, written by a language model on a curated data foundation. It explains why, not just what. Every figure and claim carries a source link. Alongside the brief sit quantitative screener lists, ranked deterministically from the figures, without a language model.

The Morning Report

2026-09-09

Today's picture: Brent oil surged toward $100 a barrel after the US military struck Iranian tankers near the Kharg Island export hub, an escalation that rattled Wall Street more than European markets, which held broadly steady Bloomberg. The US 10-year Treasury yield closed at its highest level since October 2023, tightening the discount-rate backdrop that increasingly frames valuations from Oslo to Frankfurt FRED. In Norway, Oslo Børs firmed and the krone strengthened against both the euro and the dollar, a reminder that the country's oil exposure cuts both ways when energy markets swing this hard.

Middle East escalation pushes oil toward $100.

The US military destroyed Iranian oil tankers near the Kharg Island export hub and in the Gulf of Oman, retaliating after Iran launched missile attacks on US Navy warships, sharply escalating the Gulf confrontation WSJ, Reuters. Brent oil rose 2.89% on 8 September and is up 9.25% over five sessions, pushing the benchmark toward the psychologically important $100 a barrel level Bloomberg, FT, Finnhub. For a Europe-heavy portfolio the transmission channel is energy-cost inflation: the region imports the bulk of its oil, and a sustained move higher would feed directly into headline HICP just as the ECB weighs whether its current pause can hold. Counter-evidence: European equities showed little alarm, with the DAX flat, the CAC 40 up 0.14% and the Euro Stoxx 50 up 0.14% on the day, arguing against an immediate growth scare being priced into the region's risk assets TradingView.

Headline HICP inflation rose to 2.94% y/y in July from 2.75%, and core inflation (excluding food and energy) rose to 2.47% from 2.36%, while real GDP growth accelerated to 0.6% q/q in the second quarter (1.2% y/y) from stagnation in the first Eurostat, FRED. Unemployment held steady at 6.4%. The ECB's deposit rate stands at 2.25%, and its July statement signalled an intention to hold at its meeting on 10 September, a stance a fresh oil shock could test if energy costs push headline inflation further above target ECB. European equity benchmarks were broadly flat to firmer on the day, DAX unchanged, CAC 40 up 0.14%, Euro Stoxx 50 up 0.14%, FTSE 100 down 0.10%, all still below their record levels: DAX by 2.3%, Euro Stoxx 50 by 2.5%, CAC 40 by 5.0%, FTSE 100 by 1.6% TradingView. Counter-evidence: unemployment's steadiness at 6.4% argues against an overheating labour market that would justify tightening beyond the current hold.

Frozen sample day from the app. An excerpt, not the full edition: the demo shows two of the day’s stories, three of the lists and two of the price tables.

How it is made

  1. 01

    Fetch

Macro figures from FRED, the ECB and Norges Bank, market data and news metadata from a register of sources. Never article full text, only headline and deep link.

  2. 02

    Rank

Candidates are deduplicated and scored by a language model against a fixed theme profile covering central banks, rate paths, market regimes and Norwegian macro.

  3. 03

    Write

The brief is written in English and Norwegian in one structured call, with a source link required on every point and a counter-evidence line in every story.

  4. 04

    Deliver

Runs automatically every morning and is published as a static page with a language toggle, price tables and audio playback.

Traceability

Every run logs everything sent to the model, meaning all macro figures, all news candidates and every relevance score with its rationale. Any figure in the brief can be traced back to the log for that date.

Each datapoint carries its own date and source. If a field grows too old it is degraded and flagged rather than presented as fresh, and the brief closes with a source footer stating the oldest datapoint and the number of degraded fields.

Data sources

FRED, the ECB, Norges Bank, Eurostat, the Atlanta Fed, Finnhub and an RSS register including the FT, WSJ, Bloomberg, The Economist and DN.
